Here comes another blog, dedicated to everything delicious and cute. I’ve been following several food blogs for a while now, and somehow, the wish to share some of the lovely aspects of my life (which usually means cooking and baking) got stronger and stronger, until I created kawaii kitchen.
A wonderful thing about Valentine’s Day is that it’s a perfect occasion for baking, so I decided to start my blog with a (belated) Valentine’s Day post.
Some time ago, one of my friends gave me a file for collecting my favorite recipes, and she added a really basic Brownie-recipe for a start. Valentine’s Day seemed to be a good reason for trying that recipe, so I made the brownies, cut them in half and added a simple ganache filling. The brownies turned out to be delicious as well as lovely. For the perfect “valentinish” look, I cut out small hearts from the center of the upper half. Here’s the result:
The brownies are sweet, mellow and slightly crispy on top, they have a rich chocolate flavour, just like good brownies should and the ganache puts a hint of creaminess into their center.
I also tried some without the filling, because I baked these brownies for the first time and wasn’t sure how they would turn out to be and if my idea for the ganache-filling would complement their taste. The result was that I had to keep myself from eating too many of the not-yet-filled-brownies, they were just so yummy – with the rich taste of chocolate and still a little warm from the oven.
I can definitely recommend this recipe – it’s simple, doesn’t take much time and makes some really good brownies – perfect with or without the filling, whatever you prefer 😉
|Valentine’s Day Brownies – Part 1: Basic Brownies
340g cane sugar
140g butter (cut into small pieces)
1 pinch of salt
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
120g wheat flour
80g cocoa powder
120g chocolate chips
- Preheat the oven to 335°F/170°C . Grease a rectangular cake mould (mine was about 22cm x 28cm).
- Put sugar, butter, eggs, salt and vanilla into a large bowl and mix together until well combined. Add flour, cocoa powder and chocolate chips and stir in carefully (I recommend doing that by hand – otherwise you might end up with half of the flour dusted over your kitchen!).
- Scrape the batter into the cake mould and bake for 30-40 minutes. Take the brownies out of the oven and let cool completely. (While waiting, you could make the filling!)
- Remove the cake from the mould and cut off the edges if neccessary, so you have an even rectangle. Next, cut into 12 brownies (of course you could also make a different number; mine were about 6cm x 7cm). Halve them and, if you want to, cut out small hearts from the upper half. Fill the brownies and enjoy them!
|Valentine’s Day Brownies – Part 2: Bittersweet Chocolate Filling
about 120g bittersweet chocolate, roughly chopped (or chocolate chips)
2 tbsp. whole milk
1 tbsp. Bailey’s (or other cream liquor. If you don’t like alcohol in your filling, just substitute with milk or cream)
- Add water to a medium-sized pan and heat it until simmering. Put all the ingredients into a small bowl and put the bowl into the simmering water – but be careful not to let any water swash into the bowl, that would ruin the ganache. If neccessary, remove some of the water from the pan.
- Let the chocolate melt. This will take a little while, about 10 to 20 minutes. Don’t forget to stir every few minutes!
- When the chocolate has melted completely and is well combined with milk and cream liquor, let it cool down for a moment and then have fun filling your brownies!
